Nalni Chen

ABOUT
Nalni Chen is a pianist, cellist and percussionist from Taiwan. A passionate advocate for contemporary and experimental music, she currently pursues Postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music as a scholar with Joseph Havlat and Mei-Ting Sun, following her graduation from the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester, where she received the Faculty of Humanities Dean’s Award.


As a soloist, Nalni Chen has performed concertos ranging from Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Hive Sinfonia, to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Burnley Orchestra and Manchester Beethoven Orchestra, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in Malvern. She has given recital performances at St Columb’s Hall as a Concerto Award finalist and at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton Opera House.
Committed to making music accessible to all, she performs across concert halls and community spaces, including care homes, championing innovative repertoire for diverse audiences.
Nalni enjoys exploring new sound worlds while embracing a broad repertoire from Baroque to the present day. Her contemporary repertoire includes works by Ligeti, Boulez, and George Crumb, alongside music by Pauline Oliveros, Julius Eastman, Nicole Lizée, Jonathan Harvey, and Huang Ruo
Nalni’s collaborative work spans contemporary and cross-disciplinary projects. She performed John Psathas’ Voices at the End and Graham Fitkin’s Log as part of Six Pianos ensemble, appearing alongside Fitkin in performance.
Further collaborations include a performance of Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye with pianist Steven Osborne, and close work with composers including John Casken, Patrick Harrex and Colin Riley.
She has received the RNCM Marjorie Clementi Memorial Award for the highest mark in her final recital, the Patricia Cunliffe Award for Contemporary Music, and the Procter-Gregg Prize for Performance at the University of Manchester.
As a versatile musician, Nalni has also collaborated with other musicians in the Music business, including Izzy Stylez, a singer-songwriter from London, for his Christmas single ‘Head In the Clouds’, as well as working with violinist Aleksey Igudesman.
